PSG Edges Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the prestigious cup on 14 different times.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
