Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
